Core Architectural Deliverables

  • Multi-form-factor streaming architecture spanning Android mobile and Android TV devices
  • ExoPlayer integration optimized for live sports, adaptive bitrates, and video-on-demand playback
  • Vendor knowledge transfer planning and transition into TCS delivery ownership
  • Performance and stability recommendations guided by Google Play Android Vitals

Overview

A premier over-the-top (OTT) digital entertainment platform delivering digital streaming experiences across both handheld Android mobile devices and large-screen Android TV platforms. The platform was designed to stream movies, episodic television shows, and high-concurrency live sports broadcasts, alongside synchronized interactive play-along experiences for viewers during live games.

I led this engagement at Tata Consultancy Services from February 2021 to February 2022, guiding architecture, coordinating Android engineering teams, leading vendor transition, and driving runtime performance enhancements.

1. Business Need

As consumer viewing habits shifted toward digital streaming and connected television ecosystems, the client needed a cohesive, high-performance Android platform capable of serving diverse viewing contexts:

  • Unified Multi-Device Presence: Delivering consistent video streaming capabilities across both touchscreen mobile devices and lean-back Android TV environments using D-pad remote navigation.
  • High-Concurrency Live Events: Streaming high-stakes live sporting events where stream stability, low latency, and quick recovery from network fluctuations are paramount.
  • Interactive Engagement: Embedding synchronized play-along interactive features that allowed users to participate in live quizzes and predictions during broadcasts without disrupting video playback.
  • Seamless Vendor Transition: Transferring technical ownership and platform knowledge smoothly from an incumbent vendor to the incoming TCS engineering organization without service interruption.

2. Constraints

The project operated within stringent architectural and platform limitations:

  • Form-Factor Diversity: Reconciling the distinct UX and interaction patterns between touch-centric mobile phones and 10-foot D-pad navigation on Android TV within a shared engineering workstream.
  • Playback Latency & Buffer Constraints: Tuning buffer sizes and adaptive bitrate algorithms to accommodate variable mobile network bandwidths while preventing buffering pauses during live sports moments.
  • Resource Constraints on TV Hardware: Many consumer Android TV chipsets feature restricted CPU and memory capabilities compared to high-end smartphones, demanding strict resource discipline.
  • Complex Cloud Backends: Coordinating client streaming sessions with an extensive AWS cloud backend infrastructure governing content delivery, authorization tokens, and live telemetry feeds.

3. My Contributions

During this engagement, my scope of responsibility included:

  • Vendor Knowledge Transfer: Planned and executed comprehensive vendor knowledge transfer sessions, systematically documenting system dependencies, build pipelines, codebase architectures, and operational runbooks.
  • Solution Design & Sprint Planning: Collaborated closely with client technical leads on architectural design decisions, translating functional requirements into modular epics and leading sprint planning across Android teams.
  • Android Team Coordination: Coordinated engineering teams across mobile and TV workstreams, establishing code quality benchmarks and ensuring unified interface contracts with AWS backend services.
  • Android Vitals Performance Optimization: Regularly reviewed Android Vitals telemetry to identify slow render loops, memory spikes, and ANRs, formulating targeted recommendations to optimize playback lifecycle transitions and ExoPlayer surface rendering.

4. What the Solution Supported

The engineering efforts delivered a robust, feature-rich media platform supporting:

  • Rich Catalog Streaming: Video-on-demand catalog featuring episodic TV series and full-length feature films with multi-language audio tracks and subtitles.
  • Low-Latency Live Sports: Resilient live sports streaming leveraging ExoPlayer’s adaptive bitrate switching to minimize playback stalls during peak viewer influx.
  • Synchronized Play-Along: Real-time interactive components synchronized with live game events, enabling viewer polls and gamified predictions.
  • Stable Multi-Device Releases: Consistent application delivery across diverse Android versions and consumer television hardware profiles.
