Core Architectural Deliverables

  • Foundation architecture and modular structure for store order management workflows
  • Direct integration with portable Zebra barcode and receipt printers via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
  • Collaborative solution workshops conducted on-site with retail stakeholders in Dubai
  • Cross-platform enterprise implementation leveraging C# and the Xamarin framework

Overview

Modern omnichannel retail operations require physical stores to act as localized fulfillment centers—processing click-and-collect customer orders, managing store-to-door deliveries, and handling cross-channel returns with speed and accuracy.

As a Technology Lead at Infosys from April 2019 to October 2019, I helped shape the architecture and established the core technical structure for an omnichannel store order management mobile solution for a prominent Middle East retailer. The initiative encompassed participatory design workshops on-site in Dubai and the integration of portable Zebra mobile printers for real-time order labeling.

1. Business Need

The Middle East retailer sought to unify online customer demand with physical store inventory and fulfillment capabilities:

  • Store-Based Fulfillment: Enabling store associates to receive, pick, pack, and stage online orders directly from retail store shelves.
  • Real-Time Label Generation: Equipping associates to generate shipping slips, dispatch barcodes, and customer receipts on the go using belt-mounted mobile printers.
  • Accurate Handover Verification: Streamlining click-and-collect customer pickups at customer service desks to minimize wait times and prevent erroneous handovers.
  • Rapid Cross-Platform Rollout: Providing an enterprise mobile solution capable of running consistently across heterogeneous retail mobile devices.

2. Constraints

The project operated under distinct technical and physical store floor constraints:

  • Peripheral Hardware Diversity: Ensuring stable Bluetooth and local Wi-Fi connectivity between handheld mobile terminals and portable Zebra thermal printers across busy store environments.
  • High-Paced Store Operations: Associates needed intuitive, error-resistant screen flows requiring minimal training during seasonal retail sales surges.
  • Cross-Platform Abstractions: Structuring application components using C# and Xamarin so business logic remained shared while preserving native hardware access for printer SDKs.
  • International Retail Context: Operating within the commercial and physical retail requirements of regional Middle Eastern store formats.

3. My Contributions

My technical leadership during this six-month architecture and delivery engagement included:

  • On-Site Client Collaboration: Participated directly in collaborative solution design workshops with client leadership and retail operations stakeholders on-site in Dubai.
  • Foundation Architectural Design: Shaped the architectural blueprint and built the foundational codebase structure for the store order management module using C# and Xamarin.
  • Hardware Integration Leadership: Architected the peripheral integration module communicating with Zebra mobile printers, encapsulating printer discovery, CPCL/ZPL formatting, and print spooling queues.
  • Technical Mentorship: Guided development engineers on MVVM design patterns, asynchronous state handling, and peripheral exception management.

4. What the Solution Supported

The architectural foundation and order management system enabled comprehensive store floor capabilities:

  • Streamlined Order Picking: Clear digital pick lists guiding store staff systematically through store aisles to gather items ordered by online customers.
  • Mobile Printing at Point-of-Work: Instant generation of customer collection labels and parcel receipts directly at the packing station via portable Zebra thermal printers.
  • Click-and-Collect Pickup Validation: Instant barcode verification when customers arrived to claim orders, confirming payment status and item completeness.
  • Operational Auditing: Clear digital audit trails tracking when orders were received, picked, packed, and released to logistics couriers or customers.
